Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County is a non-profit, volunteer organization whose primary goal is to promote literacy in Beaufort County. The mission of the Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County (LVBC) is to empower the citizens of Beaufort County by providing in reading, writing, English, and mathematics and specialty areas (GED, CRC, citizenship test, ESL, helping children with homework, written portion of driver's license test, ASVAB, job applications, workplace skill development, computer skills, etc.). This is done through one-on-one or small group tutoring of adults 18 and older. This service is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL! Tutoring takes place in public areas such as Brown Library, BCCC Learning Resource Library, churches, and other public locations agreed upon between student and tutor. Online tutoring is available for a limited number of participants.
The LVBC staff interviews learners and tutors regarding interests, transportation, choice of tutoring site, and possible scheduling of sessions. The experience of the tutor, and needs of the learner, are given top priority.
The nonprofit Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County was established in October 2001 in response to the great need for adult literacy services in this poor, rural county and legally incorporated in May 2002 and has 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

The nonprofit Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County was established in October 2001 in response to the great need for adult literacy services in this poor, rural county and legally incorporated in May 2002 and has 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.
LVBC is an affiliate chapter of ProLiteracy America, formerly known as Literacy Volunteers of America. The organization is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors that meets monthly. The group began operations in the home of Jim and Frances Pressley and later was offered a cubicle at Job Link in return for services to their clients seeking employment counseling. (Now NC Works).
As the program grew, it became necessary to hire a part-time Program Manager and move to a larger space with the agency. In 2017 with the relocation of NC Works, LVBC rented an office owned by the United Way at 113 East 15th Street in Washington.
The group has partnered with BCCC Continuing Ed. Division, NC Works, Social Services, Beaufort County Jail, Life Quest, Beaufort County Schools, Beaufort County Health Department, and other agencies offering free tutoring to their clients as needed.
The mission of the Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County (LVBC) is to empower the citizens of Beaufort County by providing free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring in the "Literacies": Reading, Writing, English (including speaking and ESL), Math, Science, Digital, Financial and Citizenship for their personal enrichment and improved job skills.
