Our New Program Coordinator

Three new tutors have joined the ranks of Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County and are ready to assist adults who need help in improving their reading, writing, speaking and math skills.  The group completed a 15 hour training workshop which included information on techniques for teaching adults, phonics, sight words, word patterns, using the language experience technique, comprehension, writing, and lesson planning.  Literacy 


Volunteers provides free tutoring in the GED, Hi-Set, and CRC along with help in passing the naturalization tests.  Sessions are held in public places for about 90 minutes a week.

Our New Program Coordinator

Literacy Volunteers welcomes Pam Deese as our new Program Coordinator!  Pam is a retired teacher having taught in Virginia, Beaufort County, and most recently in Pitt County.  She has a Master's degree in Education/Learning Disabilities from East Carolina University.  She has been a 7th grade ELA (English Language Arts) teacher and 8 years teaching Special Education.  She began work on February 24, 2020.

Lt. Kathryn Bryan, Beaufort County Jail Administrator has requested help for long term detainees.


In improving their reading, writing, speaking and math skills to

help them when they are able to rejoin society. We will concentrate on GED and work place skills.


We hope to begin the program around June 1st. If you are interested contact our office at 974-1812
